(No. B/18) Dr. F. Aumeer (Third Member for Port Louis South and Port Louis Central) asked the Minister of Health and Wellness whether, in regard to the death of dialysis patients during COVID-19 pandemic, he will state if the report of the Fact-Finding Committee thereon will be rendered public, indicating the supportive actions, if any, given or will be given to the families thereof.
Madam Speaker, with your kind permission, I shall reply to PQ I B/18 and PQ I B/24 together, as they relate to the same subject. Madam Speaker, first and foremost, I wish to extend my deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones during this tragic period. The loss of these lives is a matter of profound regret, and we remain committed to addressing this issue with transparency, accountability and a focus on systemic improvement. Madam Speaker, since the coming into office of this government, one of the priorities has been to look into the circumstances that led to the death of dialysis patients which
36 occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Fact-Finding Committee set up by the previous government identified major shortcomings in the management of this crisis. However, despite public demand, the findings of this report were never released. This lack of transparency only compounded the sense of injustice experienced by the grieving families. Madam Speaker, the present government is committed to rectifying these past failures and ensuring the right balance is struck between accountability and respect for individuals involved. The report produced by the Fact-Finding Committee contains sensitive, personal and medical information, and we must uphold patients’ confidentiality as a matter of principle. There is no objection to tabling of the report before the National Assembly, provided the consent of the families of the deceased is obtained. My Ministry is arranging accordingly.
Thank you, yes Dr. Aumeer.
All these information will be made available once we get the clearance from the families.
