(No. B/618) Dr. S. Prayag (First Member for Piton & Rivière du Rempart) asked the Minister of Gender Equality and Family Welfare whether, in regard to the Rivière du Rempart Women Empowerment Centre, she will state – (a) the reasons for the closure thereof in 2020, and (b) whether consideration will be given for the re-opening thereof and, if so, when and, if not, why not.
Mr Deputy Speaker, Sir, with regard to part (a) of the question, I am informed that the Indira Gandhi Women Empowerment Centre at Rivière du Rempart was closed in March 2021 for reasons known only to the previous government. With regard to part (b) of the question, in view of financial constraints, I wish to inform the House that priority is being given to reopen and operate women empowerment centres in government-owned buildings. With regard to Rivière du Rempart, actions have already been initiated to find a solution so that women of the region are not penalised.

Can the hon. Minister inform the House whether discussions are being entertained with the Local Government Authority Ministry so as to take on the building at the New Market at Rivière du Rempart for the same? Thank you.
Yes, Sir.
