(No. B/80) Mr K. Rookny (Third Member for Pamplemousses &Triolet) asked the Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs and External Communications, Minister of Finance, Minister for Rodrigues and Outer Islands whether, in regard to Mauritian citizenship, he will, for the benefit of the House, obtain information as to the number of Non- Mauritian Citizens who have been granted Mauritian citizenship at the Prime Minister’s discretion for the period January 2015 to November 2024.
Reply: By virtue of the Mauritius Citizenship Act, the Prime Minister may grant Mauritian citizenship to a non-citizen subject to specified conditions under the different sections of the Act. Notwithstanding the specified conditions in the Act, sections 5(3) and 9(5) give the Prime Minister the power to use his discretion to grant Mauritian citizenship to a non-citizen, if he is satisfied that it is in the public interest. From January 2015 to November 2024, 4,225 non-citizens were granted Mauritian citizenship, out of which 107 were granted at the discretion of the then Prime Minister.
