MR SEWRAM SAKARAM

The Prime Minister

Madam Speaker, it is with sadness that we have learnt on Wednesday 05 March of this year of the demise of Mr Sewram Sakaram, also known as Siram Sakaram, former Member of the National Assembly. Mr Sakaram was born on 24 April 1952 in Port Louis, and he pursued higher education in the fields of Economics and Social Science. During his professional career, Mr Sakaram served as a teacher at the St Esprit College. Madam Speaker, Mr Sakaram was a Member of the Mouvement Millitant Mauricien. He contested the 1983 elections under the banner of the MMM for Constituency No. 16 (Vacoas and Floreal) but he was not returned. He again stood for the General Elections in 1987 for Constituency No. 16 under the banner of L’Union MMM/MTD/FTS but he was not returned again. From January 1987 to December 1987, he served the city of Quatre Bornes as Deputy Mayor, and in 1988 as Mayor. In the year 1995, Mr Sakaram stood for the National Assembly Elections for Constituency No. 16, again the same constituency, under the banner of the Alliance PTR/MMM and was returned as a Second Member. In the year 1996, he was appointed Member of the Public Accounts Committee. Again, in the year 2000, Mr Sakaram was returned as a Second Member for the National Assembly Elections under the banner of the Alliance MSM/MMM, for the same Constituency, that is, Vacoas and Floreal. Mr Sakaram contested the 2005 National Assembly Elections in the same Constituency, Vacoas and Floreal, under the banner of the Alliance MSM/MMM but he was not returned. Madam Speaker, may I kindly request you to direct the Acting Clerk to convey the deep condolences of the Assembly to the bereaved family. Thank you.
