Jhummun (Second Member for Rivière des Anguilles & Souillac) asked the Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs and External Communications, Minister of Finance, Minister for Rodrigues and Outer Islands whether, in regard to horse racing, he will – (a) for the benefit of the House, obtain for the period 2015 to 2024 from the – (i) Gambling Regulatory Authority, information as to the evolution of the rate of betting tax thereon; 30 (ii) Mauritius Revenue Authority, information as to the amount of revenue generated therefrom as tax, and (b) state if consideration will be given to shift the tax burden from players to operators.
Madam Speaker, with regard to part (a)(i) of the question, I am tabling the information, for the period 2015 to 2024, relating to the evolution of the rate of betting tax on horseracing. Concerning part (a)(ii) of the question, I am informed by the Mauritius Revenue Authority that the total amount of revenue generated for the period 2015 to 2024 was Rs4.5 billion as betting tax on horseracing. Regarding part (b) of the question, the proposal to consider the shifting of the tax burden from players to operators will be again examined in the context of the forthcoming budget.
