(No. B/705) Dr. S. Prayag (First Member for Piton & Rivière du Rempart) asked the Minister of Health and Wellness whether, in regard to the reduction in the number of funded posts for the position of Principal Medical Laboratory Technologists (PMLT’s) from 18 to 12 in the 2025-2026 Budget, he will state the – (a) reasons therefor, and (b) measures envisaged, if any, to prevent risks of decline in supervision, technical and scientific oversight of the laboratories concerned therewith in the absence of PMLTs given the ongoing expansion.
Reply: There were 18 posts in the grade of Principal Medical Laboratory Technologist on the establishment of my Ministry during Financial Year 2024-2025, out of which, 12 posts were filled in a substantive capacity, while assignment of duty was given to six permanent vacancies. However, funds have been provided for only 12 posts of Principal Medical Laboratory Technologists in Budget Estimates 2025-2026 instead of 18. The House may wish to note that a recommendation was made to the Public Service Commission on 05 June 2025 to fill six vacancies in the grade of Principal Medical Laboratory Technologist which were funded in Budget 2024-2025. As regards part (b) of the question, needful is being done for the assignment of duties of Principal Medical Laboratory Technologist and payment of an ad hoc allowance to ensure
131 that there will be no decline in the supervision, technical and scientific oversight of the laboratories. Concurrently, approval of the Ministry of Public Service and Administrative Reforms is being sought for the payment of the appropriate allowance. CONSTITUENCY NO.13 – INCINERATOR SERVICES
