(No. B/532) Mr N. Beejan (Second Member for Grand' Baie & Poudre d'Or) asked the Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs and External Communications, Minister of Finance, Minister for Rodrigues and Outer Islands whether, in regard to the Grand Gaube Police Station, he will, for the benefit of the House, obtain from the Commissioner of Police, information as to the number of Police Officers posted thereat, indicating – 15 (a) their respective ranks, and (b) the number of – (i) vehicles at the disposal thereof, and (ii) contraventions booked since January 2024 to date.
Madam Speaker, I am informed by the Commissioner of Police that the Grand Gaube Police Station covers an area of 11 square kilometres with some 20,000 inhabitants. The surrounding areas of Sans Souci, Anse La Raie, Petit Paquet, St. Francois, Calodyne, Petit Camp, Melville, and Camp La Serpe, amongst others, fall under the jurisdiction of Grand Gaube Police Station. In regard to part (a) of the question, I am informed that 51 Police Officers in the following ranks are posted at Grand Gaube Police Station – • 1 Chief Inspector; • 2 Inspectors; • 1 Sub-Inspector; • 15 Police Sergeants; • 2 Women Police Sergeants; • 20 Police Constables, and • 10 Women Police Constables. Furthermore, the Grand Gaube Police Station is supported in the exercise of its functions by other Units/Branches of the Police, such as, the Goodlands Central Investigation Division, the Northern Division Supporting Unit, the Field Intelligence Unit, the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit based at Poudre d’Or, the Emergency Response Service, the National Coast Guard at Grand Gaube, the Police de L’Environnement of Trou aux Biches, and the Traffic Police. In regard to part (b)(i) of the question, I am informed that two police vans are allotted to Grand Gaube Police Station. As regards part (b)(ii) of the question, 454 contraventions had been established in the year 2024, and 332 during the period from January 2025 to 11 June 2025. All the contraventions were related to road traffic offences, except one established in 2024 was for the offence of noise pollution causing nuisance.

In fact, the Commissioner of Police is looking at all police stations across the island to see what can be done. I should have added that he also carried out a special crackdown operation because of the noise pollution caused by motorcycles with inefficient silencers and drivers operating motor vehicles under the influence of alcohol or illicit drugs, and music from bungalows, guest houses and on the public beaches.
