Babajee (First Member for Savanne & Black River) asked the Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, Home Affairs and External Communications, Minister of Finance, Minister for Rodrigues and Outer Islands whether, in regard to the inquiry initiated by the Financial Crimes Commission in February 2026 against one Mr G.M. in connection with an alleged money laundering offence, he will, for the benefit of the House, obtain information as to where matters stand.
Madam Speaker, I am informed by the Financial Crimes Commission that the investigation into the case of alleged money laundering in dangerous drugs related cases involving Mr G.M, was, in fact, initiated in September of last year. On 26 February 2026, the Commission carried out a search operation at the residence of Mr G.M. in Petite Rivière and seized a sum of Rs1,074,725 in cash and six vehicles, and therefore, proceeded to arrest him. On 27 February 2026, a provisional charge of money laundering was lodged before the District Court of Bambous against Mr G.M., and he was remanded to police cell. On 05 March 2026, Mr G.M. was released on bail upon furnishing two sureties amounting to Rs500,000 and entered into a recognizance of Rs3,000,000. Madam Speaker, the Financial Crimes Commission is pursuing its investigation into the money laundering case, financing of drug dealing and asset recovery.
